windows firewall question

Windows Firewall Question

I finally figured out that Windows Firewall was blocking access to my ISP's FTP website. I've been using Zone Alarm for 6 or 7 years and have no idea how to use Windows Firewall other than to turn it off.
Unfortunately, Zone Alarm does not work with Vista, so until it does, I have no other choice than to use Windows Firewall.
Question - How do I tell Windows Firewall to allow me to drag and drop photos, files, etc. to my ISP provided website?
Thanks
Joe

Hi,
Click the start button, type "firewall" into the search box and hit <enter>. You may have to agree to run the snapin if UAP is running to open the firewall console. In the action column, click on "new rule" to change port and program settings. FTP uses port 21 normally.

There is nothing in the Actins column that says "new rule". It's clear this firewall is not for end-users. Any way to delete it?
Thanks

You can turn it off, but it is designed for end-users and it is quite usable.

I suppose it is, if you've never seen Zone Alarm.

Sorry Joe, missed one step. After opening the console, expand the left column under Console Root/Windows Firewall with... and select the connection type. Then you should see the rule option in the right column.

Hi Rick - I don't see anything that remotely resembles establishing a connection with my ISP's FTP site.

Open the necessary port, that should be all you need to do.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it also uses 22, doesn't it? For PASV mode (or is that for non-PASV mode... I always got those confused.)

22 is used for ssh, tftp uses 69, ftp data can use 20.

20! I had to deal with firewalls and ftp for a while on a game I played, could never get it working for about half our users, other half worked fine. Those that worked, worked in either PASV or not, those that didn't, well, they never worked. I tried everything. That's the reason I have no hair now. =)
Obviously, it's been a while since I've had to deal with FTP ports. All smtp and nntp for me now.
